Stress can occur for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately it can affect your overall health and you should try to avoid it if you can. There are five simple things you can do to beat stress.
1. Take A Walk After Dinner
Walking after a hard day will help ease some of the stress you may be feeling. It will allow you to decompress and relax as well as have quiet time to yourself. Even a 15 minute walk can do wonders for your state of mind. Just try to avoid jogging or running because it can actually speed up your heart rate and make it harder for you to sleep later on.
2. Write Down Your Feelings
A journal or diary isn’t just for teenagers or children. Writing down your feelings is a great way to express yourself and get things out that are bothering you. It may also help you take a situation that you see as stressful and look at it differently once you see it in writing. If you aren’t comfortable writing down your feelings on paper, consider typing them into a word processing document. That way you can save them on your computer and have them password protected to ensure that only you will be able to view them.
3. Give Yourself Enough Time
One of the biggest things that individuals do to bring stress upon themselves is to be in a rush to get to places on time. Being chronically late or trying to beat the clock constantly can lead to anxiety and isn’t good for your overall health. If you find yourself having a difficult time trying to not be late to your commitments try setting your watch 5-10 minutes fast. Also prepare for your commitments ahead of time by packing items you need in the car beforehand or by mapping out routes to get there well in advance.
4. Allow Yourself To Indulge Sometimes
It is important to have self-control most of the time. However, every now and then it is okay to indulge in a guilty pleasure. In fact, indulging in things like comfort foods or a few hours at the spa once in a while can help you beat stress and feel relaxed. The key is to only do it on occasion and to not let it become an unhealthy habit. When trying to figure out a way to indulge to relieve stress, think about something that you enjoy doing and that helps you relax.
5. Put Things Into Perspective
You can beat stress by putting things into perspective. Many times if you evaluate a situation that is causing you stress you will see that things aren’t nearly as bad as they seem to be. Once you determine why a particular situation is stressful you can get to the root of the problem and discover ways to change things. In a lot of situations, the more stressed out we get by them the worse they actually become. Keep perspective – find the humor – or, realize the situation is temporary.
